21 September is the International Day of Peace. Around this day, campaigners in Scotland will be protesting the nuclear weapons still hosted in the Fasslane naval base, close to Glasgow in Scotland. The demonstration will gather at Faslane Peace Camp at 12 noon and walk from the Peace Camp to the North Gate of the base for the rally.
The aim of the rally is to to highlight the strength of support from many UN member states for Scotland, a country hosting nuclear weapons against its wishes. Scotland is a significant and relatively autonomous part of a nuclear-armed state which opposes its possession of weapons of mass destruction. As part of the United Kingdom, Scotland can currently not join the new UN Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Still, support for joining the Treaty is very strong in Scotland. The September rally will be a fine opportunity to show international support!
Together with campaigners from around the world, PAX will also be present at the rally. Many other activities are being set up around the rally as well., including a panel about divestment from nuclear weapon producers, where Maaike Beenes of PAX will be one of the speakers.
